PRE-SEASON FITNESS
There is an old saying that "You get fit to play rugby.....you don't play rugby to get fit!"
Getting yourself in the right shape to start a contact sport doesn't only make sense, it is absolutely vital. The rugby season in FL is a long one and so as coaches and players we need to be aware of over training which can lead to mental and physical burn out. But the concept of turning up the first night back in September not having done any kind of physical work for three months is a recipe for disaster. Most injuries in the early part of the season come from not being prepared physically. Not only cardie-vascular fitness, but flexibility and strength are also key components if a player wants to both perform and avoid injury.
I will be emailing all of you via the Krewe Rugby Yahoo Groups List Server, various programs that are easy to follow so that you have some guidelines to help you improve performance in these areas BEFORE rugby starts up again.
U20 ACADEMY NEWS.
We will be holding our second Rugby Academy this Fall for all players who are under 20 years old on January 1st 2012. This program is designed for both new and returning young players to develop the skills to start either the U19 HS season in November or if we have enough numbers field our own U20 side. The concept is that too many players who played U19 HS rugby drop out in the season after they "graduate" as the step to senior is too great and they really need another season to develop both the skills and physical attributes so that they compete successfully and safely at the men's senior level. The Academy looks to bridge that gap while offering a fun, safe environment environment for younger players to continue playing after HS.
Registration is now open for the Fall Academy. For more details, visit the "Tampa Bay Krewe U20 Rugby Academy" Face Book page for updates.
SPRING TOUR TO WALES AND FRANCE.
The club is planning a tour to Wales and France in March 2012. The tour will take place over Spring Break and include visits to Cardiff, Aberdare and Paris. There will be three matches/scrimmages, and a number of practice sessions with WRU and FFR Staff Coaches. We will catch the Wales v Italy 6 Nations game in the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, visit a Coal mine museum, a Welsh Whiskey Distillery and sight see in Paris as well as taking in all of the local culture. Spots are going quickly and deposits are due by the end of the month.
